What is the correct Time of Iftaar, Breaking the Fast ?

I read that one should finish their fast at night (……raat tak poora karo), but we do Iftar in evening when there is quite a lot of light. Why don’t we wait for darkness?

Answer

Night could mean either beginning of night or a time well into the night. We break our fast when night just about begins. What you call sunset is the beginning of night. It’s like someone was to say that you will be allowed to eat as soon as you enter Lahore. It could either mean that as soon as you enter the boundary of Lahore you can start eating or it could men that you will be alllowed to eat only after you are inside the city by a good margin.
It’s the first meaning that makes more sense because the second meanings can again raise many questions. Likewise is the case of keeping fast until night.
