Paying Zakat on jewelry when income is low (2)

Question:
I did have a discussion with my wife. I do have a car, little old vantage but it works for me. I normally get a house with my postings so it is not a worry as well. My wife is holding on the jewelry for my kids. We shall be able to spend it on their studies when they grow older. However, we do not want to prioritize world over akhirat (the Hereafter). So, if you suggest we can sell the excessive jewelry and keep only that amount over which we can afford to pay Zakat.

Response:
That’s the right approach. May the Almighty keep you on the right track! I would suggest that you sell off some part of the jewelry with the intention that you will pay Zakat for the rest of what you have every year. That way, you will have no burden on your regular cash flow. As for the education and other future expenses of your children, insha’Allah, He will inject barakah in your remaining wealth.
