What to do if someone claims to receive religious directives directly from God
Question:
Is it possible for someone to receive directions from Allah regarding different social evils? Consider a person who has been involved in interest based transactions, or did a bank job, or owned some saving certificates in the past and enjoyed interest on them, or committed some other sin. Now, if he wants to repent from that sin then does he also need to pay Kaffara (penalty) to the person who claims to receive guidance from Allah?
In fact, I know a lady who claims that she is getting instructions from Allah. According to her, Allah gives her the knowledge of Hikmat so she can understand what others cannot. If someone tries to discuss with her from Islamic point of view she becomes so aggressive.
I am really very confused about this issue. She has also written letters to Pakistani Ulamah but no one responded to her. Now, she is writing her own text regarding what she feels about the sins of other people and setting a Kaffara (penalty) for every sin.
I want to know whether this type of Mojaza (miracle) can occur in this world.
Response:
Please rest assured that after the finality of prophethood of Muhammad, alaihissalaam, no one can dictate his/her will, understanding, or experiences of dreams on anyone else on religious grounds. If a person has been having dreams, it’s his/her decision if the message in the dream needs to be acted upon or not. No one else is bound by it. We have the Qur’an and Sunnah for our guidance which are good enough to guide us in all religious matters we face in our lives. We don’t need dreams to be guided. Moreover, even in religious matters wherein different people have different views, one can politely inform others about one’s own views with arguments but one has no right to aggressively impose his views on others. As a general principle, whenever you find a religious person imposing his/her religious views on you, whether aggressively or through clever emotional blackmail, stay away from him/her. Most religious factions owe their existence to the strategy of emotional blackmail. It is important that we use our intellect to find out which of the differing views is the most acceptable. May the Almighty guide us to the right path!
