Age of Aisha at the time of marriage

Question:
What was the age of Hazrat Ayesha at her marriage with the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Many people from America, Europe and Australia who converted to Islam are extremely confused and under pressure from the Non-Muslims who keep attacking them for following a man who married an “under-aged” girl while he himself was over 50 years old.

Response:
The age of Ayesha has been generally speaking wrongly understood. Some recent researches have shown convincingly that she was much older the time of marriage (18 years or so). I am not an expert in history, but given a choice, I will obviously prefer the latter opinion. Again, my religion is not based on the reports that have come down to us through individuals. It's based on Qur'an and Sunnah, which are both authentic in the way they have been transmitted.
