Interpreting Al-Baqarah:25, "Why, this is what we were fed with before"
Question:
I did not understand the meaning of the following verse:
"But give glad tidings to those who believe and work righteousness, that their portion is Gardens, beneath which rivers flow. Every time they are fed with fruits therefrom, they say: "Why, this is what we were fed with before," for they are given things in similitude; and they have therein companions pure (and holy); and they abide therein (for ever). (2:25)
Response:
I guess the problem of understanding you are confronting is in this part of the verse: "Why, this is what we were fed with before". There could be a number of possible explanations that can be offered for this statement:
1) The blessings of the paradise would be somewhat similar to the blessings of this life, and therefore the people of paradise would know them from before.
2) The people of paradise would know them already because they were informed about them by the Qur'an.
3) They know them because they would be the physical manifestation of the spiritual joys they had in the worldly life.
Maybe all three are correct. wallahau Alam.
