A Career in Finance, religiously viable or not?
Question:
Dear Sir:
Assalam-o-Alaikum
I am currently pursuing my BBA from IBA. I have a strong interest in finance. But sir, I'm extremely confused. I want to know that if i work in a commercial bank, and purify the income by giving away the interest, then is that acceptable according to Shariah? Furthermore, Multinational Companies also deal in practices that are not compliant with shariah so what should I do?
I would be anxiously waiting for your response
Sincerely,
Saira Farooq
Response:
Wa’Alaikum Assalam
Doing job in a conventional bank is not a good idea because of the interest factor. However, we now have Islamic banks functioning too side by side. I am myself not fully comfortable with all that they are doing. However, a part of their working is in the right direction. Hopefully other matters would improve with the passage of time. Nothing can happen overnight. We are responsible to the Almighty for what is possible for us to do. He would not make us responsible for what we can’t do.
If MNCs are doing things that are wrong and you are a part of them, the least that is expected of you is that you don’t join them in their wrong acts. If you think that joining them amounts to helping them in their wrong cause, then don’t join them and go for a job which satisfies your conscience. We are living in a world of relative goodness. Do what you think is comparatively better. Remember, at the end of the day, you are going to be responsible for your own conduct and not for others. However, most certainly, you should be careful about the fact that you are not cooperating in anything wrong.
Allah Hafiz.
