Polygamy
Question:
The Qur'an seems to suggest that sex is a very potent factor in a man. Why then do we consider it taboo in our (Muslim) society to discuss and promote second, third or fourth marriages? Why can't our women accept their husband keeping other wives? To my knowledge, the result is zina, because even men who can afford to keep several wives, do not resort to the halal means to satisfy their desires, out of fear of their only wives revolting and reacting badly.
Response:
Second marriage, and more, are allowed to men. However, they have to consider many factors before they do so. In the Arab world, it is not considered quite as unacceptable to ladies as it is here. One cannot ignore one's circumstances while taking important decisions in life. Most certainly, marrying a second time is better than committing zina (which is a big crime).
Do be clear, however, that the prophets had several wives because they had a mission to accomplish, for which, their marriages helped.
