Zakat on industrial production and services
Question:
Could you please explain the law of zakat? Also, how much zakat is to be levied on industrial production and services?
Response:
We have to learn the religion of Allah as best as we can, through whatever resources are available to us. If we understand Allah's religion in a certain way, we have to follow it the same way.
The law of Zakat, as we understand, has required three types of zakat: zakat on livestock, savings, and production. We have understood the production of services for which we get salaries as production processes for which zakat needs to be paid. Since an Islamic state wouldn't impose any other Zakat, we propose that the amount that we calculate as deductable under zakat, should be discounted for the income tax paid. What is left is the Zakat we have to pay on our salaries.
Of course, this understanding is based on the ijtihad that brings industrial production and services under the same category as agricultural production on which the prophet, alaihissalaam, required 5% or 10% of the total output to be paid as zakat (ushr). If you feel that this ijtihad is correct, it's only then that you need to pay Zakat according to it. Otherwise, you should follow the the conventional understanding.
