Showing fake degree at job

Question:
One of my friends got a good job offer for which, he required a government-recognized degree. He had studed from a private college which was not recognized by the government. Now what he did was to buy a degree from a Pakistani university, and on the bases of that degree, he got the job, and started earning good money.

Will his earnings be considered Halal or Haram? He is supporting his mother, brother and brother's family, and he himself is unmarried. He is also paying zakah and doing other Islamic things.

Response:
What this person has done is clearly wrong. Try to convince him as best as can be possible to let his employers know about what he has done. Do let him know that he will be accountable to the Almighty for committing a fraud and getting his earnings through it.

However, beyond urging him to correct himself, you shouldn't do anything else. Don't disturb his family by telling them that what they are getting is haram income. For the family, it is a simple and deserved case of being helped by a family member. If you will ask them not to accept it, they will be into an unnecessary difficulty. And Allah knows best.

The Qur'an says: "Believers, for you is responsibility for your own self; the one who has gone astray wouldn't be able to harm you, if you are on the right track."
