Why are sinners affluent?

Question:
Until about 2 years ago, I was involved in all kinds of activities which are against the religious beliefs and the teachings of Islam. I used to drink alcohol, was involved with many women, lied, cheated and literally did everything that was wrong in the eyes of Allah. Then, my economic and social situation started getting bad. I went deeper and deeper into debt, I lost respect in society, and when everything started caving in, I turned to Allah for His forgiveness, to give me strength to persevere through these hard times. I have started praying and begging for mercy from Allah.

Things have not changed much for me as yet and I hope and pray that my situation will change and improve for the better. However, the people I used to hang out with and was linked with are still involved in the same kind of activities which are against the sayings of the Qur'an and Allah.

Now my question is that I know of so many people around me and also otherwise, who are involved in all kinds of bad activities as mentioned above but are having a very good life, lots of success and respect in the society, while people like me, who are begging for forgiveness and have quit all such activities, fearing the wrath of Allah, are still having failures and a tough life.

Why is this so? How come people like me who are praying to Allah are not being rewarded while those who are cheating, lying, drinking and merry-making are getting all the bounties of Allah? It is very frustrating and I would like you to please give me an explanation for this. I look forward.

Response:
This life is a trial and the kind of trial the Almighty chooses for us is not necessarily going to be the one we like. We pray to the Almighty that He should make the trial easy for us, but we can't impose our will on Him.

The fact that the Almighty has enabled you to move out of the life of sin is the biggest gift you can get from Him. Be always thankful to Him for that. The better worldly conditions are hopefully going to follow soon. The reason why rich people, who are otherwise indulged in filth, don't get to see difficulties in life is because that's how their trial has been designed by the Almighty. Their apparent successs shouldn't confuse you. If they remain the way they are till the time they die, they are not going to succeed in the next life. Let's pray that they too see the light of the day.
