The Sunnah of Tahajjud
Question:
Did Muhammad (sws) offer Qayam-ul-Lail during ramadan congregations only, or any time of the year? Did he offer twenty rak'ahs in Taravih prayers or during Qayam-ul-Lail during the last part of Ramadam?
Response:
My information is that the prophet, alaihissalaam, offered tahajjud for three nights in the Masjid in a way that there were companions who were behind him. This practice never happened for throughout Ramadan, as is done now even for once. It also seems from the ahadith that he always offered eleven rak'ats of prayers in his tahajjud. As far as I know, no exception to this rule has been reported. However, it does seem that he allowed his companions to say more rak'ats if they so wanted.
