Giving interest on house mortgage when there is no alternative
Question:
For many Muslims in Australia, and other western contries, they have to mortgage the house, which is neither on lease nor rented. Instead, we have to pay interest to bank as part of loan.
In UK and USA where there's are more muslims present, there are some alternatives available, but not in Australia so far. I read on Internet from various Islamic scholars that "if you do not have an alternative then it is permissible to take loan on interest for your principal residence."
What is your view on this?
Response:
Although I am not completely comfortable with the opinion of Mr Ghamidi on giving interest on loans to meet all sorts of needs, I feel that in your case it's okay, because there isn't any alternative available.
