Why so many marriages by the Prophet?

Question:
Why did Prophet Muhammad had so many wives while Islam allows only four?

Response:
He had just one wife for more thn twenty years after he got married at the age of twenty-five. All his later marriages (except one) were with ladies who were widows or divorced. All these marriages were meant to support the cause of his prophetic mission. Given that they were done through the Almighty's permission, I see no problems in those marriages.
