Danish Cartoons: Boycotting Goods as a Policy
Question:
After the publishing of barbarous caricatures of prophet Muhammad (pbuh), Muslims boycotted Danish and Norwegian products. Should we continue this or can we use products like Telenor which condemn this act of printing?
Response:
I don't see any point in banning the products of any country. It may give us some personal satisfaction temporarily but it is not going to solve the real problem. The real solution to the problem is that we Muslims behave in a manner that others don't find a reason to criticize us and our beloved prophet. The person who made those caricatures knew prophet Muhammad, alaihissalaam, through us Muslims. If we want others to respect our prophet, we will have to behave in a way that others respect us.
There are several passages in the Qur'an that suggest that when the non-believers are making fun of our religion, we should leave the place where it's happening. See Qur'an 2:104 and 6:68. We can rejoin them after that activity is over. I therefore see no point in the banning exercise that has been undertaken by Muslims.
