Studying Philosophy and Literature
Question:
Is it right to study Philosophy? There is definitely philosophy behind everything, at least as discussed by western philosophers. Indeed we are not supposed to think about things which have not been revealed to us but when you read philosophy you start pin pointing everything. And what do you say about Adab (i.e. literature)?
Response:
From an Islamic point of view, I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t study philosophy. Philosophy raises questions in your mind and so does the Qur’an. The questions discussed in philosophy are about the purpose of this universe, the purpose of man, the truth about morality etc. All these issues are also discussed by the Qur’an. In fact, a good student of philosophy can benefit more from the Qur’an than an ordinary person. I would therefore suggest that if you have interest in philosophy then go ahead and study it at a good level. However, you must read the Qur’an regularly and ponder over its meanings. In case you are stuck somewhere, read the tafasir available for the right explanation or consult people you think are knowledgeable.
Similarly, there is no reason why you should avoid reading literature (adab). The Qur’an itself is a piece of literature. It belongs to the level of literary excellence where it has no near rivals. Why should anyone who is attached to the Qur’an shy away from studying other pieces of literature? Such study would only enhance your appreciation of the Qur’anic text. Here too, the condition is that you should continue to study the Qur’an regularly along with your study of literature.
