Why should we submit to God ?
Question:
I am asking some questions in the spirit of learning
about your great teachings in Islam, and I hope that my questions will not be
deemed disrespectful, for that is the spirit in which they are intended.
I am wondering about the need to submit oneself humbly before God before a
connection can be made. Isn't God above such a need? Yes, one must
submit oneself before a king, or queen or conqueror of one's land. But God is
above that, so why does he need humble submission from us?
German philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, 1729-178, wrote:
"A single grateful thought toward heaven is the most complete prayer."
Isn't that all we need to make a connection with God?
Response:
I believe that if some people are claiming that they have truth from God with them, it is their duty to keep reponding to the questions that are raised, whether politely or impolitely. Your question is very valid and has been been expressed in a very polite way.
My understanding of the Quranic stance on the issue is that God has no needs. Therefore whether we submit before Him or not, it would make no difference to Him. It is for our concern that He desires us to submit to Him. It is immoral on our part to benefit from all the blessings He has given us and yet not bother to thank Him and submit before Him.
It is not a great idea to thank and take care of the parents only when they are in need. It is my moral impulse that should incline to be thankful to them whether they need it or not.
Some people commit the error of analogizing God with humans. Quran tells us that God is free from all weaknesses and "there is none like Him."
