Giving Zakat to Brother

Question:
I am a working woman so I keep my salary in an account; I sometimes give money to my sisters and relatives without telling my husband. Is this a sin or a theft? Can I give my real brother zakat without mentioning that it is, in fact, zakat?

Response:
You have a right on your own salary. It is better that your husband knows about it, but most certainly it is not an Islamic requirement on you to inform him where you spend it. Yes, you can give your Zakat to your brother, who is not living with you, without telling him that it is Zakat.
