Are Hadith References, Universal?

Question:
For Hadith, reference is mentioned to Volume, Book and Hadith number. Are these references universal or dependant on the printer/publisher of a particular time? Please advise how a Hadith be located for further details.

Response:
Yes, it seems that they are getting universal now. That's not how they used to be referenced earlier. Typically, there used to be chapter titles followed by ahadith, numbered according to their sequence. Since books were published differently on different occasions, it used to be sometimes a cumbersome exercise to locate them. The existing system promises to make things easier. I wouldn't say that everyone follows it right now, but it is bound to get universally popular.
