Islamic source of the act of saying Niyyah before the prayers

Question:
What you're saying is that there is no niyyah, whatsoever. Since I have been taught this I am not totally convinced. Can you please relate some traditions of the Holy Prophet that supports your claim or falsifies mine. I will then be very thankful.

Response:
If you are doing something in the name of religion, it is your responsibility to be convinced that it is a part of our religious requirement. If you can’t show its religious origins, your claim would be rejected. Had I made the claim that doing 'niyyah' in prayers is a requirement, I should have brought a proof of it. Since it's you who is making the claim, the onus of proving it is on you. The fact that you have heard people saying that we must say our niyyah for prayer is not enough. Ordinary people are not a source of Islam. It is prophet Muhammad, alaihissalam, who is the only source of Islamic learning. Tell me where has he asked Muslims to do niyyah verbally before starting a new prayer? If you can't produce an evidence for that, then be sure that saying ‘niyyah’ is not a part of our formal prayer.
