Why is music considered detrimental for a religious person?

Question:
Why is music considered detrimental for someone who wishes to practice religion sincerely?

Response:
I don't believe that music is categorically forbidden in Islam. There are three possibilities on the question of music:

1. It is haram if it stirs your base emotions, especially when it sexually excites. Anything coming near that category would be totally haram.

2. There are varieties of music which are undesirable: those that talk about stuff a good Muslim wouldn't like to get indulged in, like the description of a woman's beauty, or talk of love between a man and woman, etc.

3. There is a third category which is simply allowed but perhaps not desirable if taken beyond reasonable limits - that is, if the remembrance of Allah is affected. National anthems, military bands and the likes are those harmless examples of music that cannot be described as haram. However, for a good believer, it is better if he stays away from music as much as could be possible, because it affects his objective of remembering the Almighty.
