Different opinions on the punishment of stoning

Question:
Is stoning to death an Islamic punishment? Could you also explain why people say it is if it's not?

Response:
Stoning to death is most certainly an Islamic punishment, which was administered by the prophet, may Allah's mercy be on him. The only question of dispute amongst the Muslim scholars with regard to this punishment is whether it was imposed on the people who were married adulterers (and adulteresses) or whether it was given to the people who were guilty of creating chaos in the society by taking law and order into their hands and thus revolting against Allah and His messenger. I agree with the latter point of view that is based on the understanding of the Qur'anic verse 5:34.
