Is masturbation is allowed or not?

Question:
Please explain whether masturbation is allowed in Islam or not?

Response:
I believe that it is strongly undesirable (Makruh). I can't call it Haram because for that, I need an explicit statement in the Qur'an or Hadith. If there is one, I am unaware of it. However, I can't even call it allowed (Mubah),because it is clearly something obscene, and emerges out of sinful thoughts of the doer.
