Using Zakat money to fund a Madrassah

Question:
I work at an accounts department and was faced with a query which I want to discuss with you. The query is: Can we purchase a building for "Madrasa" from the money of Zakat. This "Madrasa" will be used to teach Quran & Tafseer to women. The students will not in the Madrasa, it will only be used for studying.

Response:
To my limited knowledge, there is no reason why you can't do so. While mentioning the different avenues where Zakat money can be spent, the Qur'an mentions "in the way of Allah" as well. What you have mentioned is one way of spending in the way of Allah. Therefore there should be no problem in spending Zakat money on it. However, many of our traditional scholars don't accept this view.
